In this course we will study other structures including groups, rings, and fields. Algebra develops your thinking, specifically logic, patterns, problem solving, deductive and inductive reasoning. Exams can be rearranged for student athletes only if I am notified at least four weeks in advance. Most of the chapters are rather short (10-20 pages it seems on average), but this thorough breakdown of chapters makes each and every one rather simple to read and understand, without introducing too much at one time (refer to Herstein's Topics in Algebra if you want to see a book which doesn't have enough chapters, teaching what is essentially an entire semester worth of group theory in one overbloated chapter, which is easy to get lost in). Algebra still haunts some of us, if not in everyday life then perhaps helping your little one.

I was aware of the Moore method and inquiry-based learning (IBL), but I had never had an experience with this paradigm of teaching as a student. Their names should be included in the Authors list. Each theme is developed first for the integers, then for polynomials, and finally for rings and groups. Binary operations: The notion of addition (+) is abstracted to give a binary operation, * say. The staffing of the Athens lab with one staff member and faculty members was sufficient. And it was Dedekind and Hilbert who had first seen Galois Theory as a correspondance between subfields and subgroups of the Galois group. (Dedekind was the first to think of the Galois group as consisting of the automorphisms of the field extension rather than permutations of the roots of the polynomial in question.) Steinitz in his 1910 article developed the notions of prime field (by this time there had been a lot of work on the theory of finite fields), separable extension, and transcendence degree, and proved that every field has an algebraically closed extension.
