The first specimens of a giant rhino ever found in Turkey is a radius (forearm bone) unearthed in 2002 in the Çankırı-Çorum Basin near the village of Delice, Kırıkkale. They are located above a magma chamber and erupt several times, so that the volcanoes build up a high mountain massifs. Analyis of the swarm earthquake revealed several unusual features: hypocenters were distributed in a nearly vertical planar, northwest-trending zone, hypocenters migrated laterally away from the caldera during the first month of the swarm, and dominant focal mechanisms were oblique-normal to strike-slip in contrast with normal-faulting mechanisms of the background seismicity.

Year 2 explores more specialised geological topics, including advanced geological research methods, igneous petrology and volcanology, and sedimentology. While we are definitely not big fans of EXCEL, it works well for modules in undergraduate volcanology because: (0) virtually every student has ready access to EXCEL, (1) some students have never before analyzed data of any sort using a computer, excel provides a simple introduction, (2) we have found that scripting languages (MatLab, GMT, R) tend to overwhelm the discussion at this level - in other words students learn about the tool rather than about the concept, (3) enough students already know EXCEL basics and tend to form a supportive network.

The associate degree program enables students to complete their basic courses, which can then be applied towards a bachelor’s degree. These are essential to the engineering underpinnings of the degree. As part of the geology and geophysics program, students can participate in studies conducted by the volcanology, geochemistry and petrology research division, which uses Hawaii's active and inactive volcanoes as natural laboratories.
