In minor keys, the modulation is to the minor dominant. Our second piece is Beethoven’s monumental String Quartet in A minor. So far as the listening public was concerned, it might as well have been created entirely on its own rather than as the second section of a full four-movement concerto. The concerto, as understood in this modern way, arose in the Baroque period side by side with the concerto grosso, which contrasted a small group of instruments with the rest of the orchestra.

Often, the ritornello will sneak into the texture, instead of making a powerful statement. Of these five, only the Third Concerto has been performed with any degree of frequency, while the others remain less well-known. Saint-Sa�ns was born in Paris on October 9, 1835. The greater number of Bach's orchestral works date from his tenure at the Cothen court beginning in 1717 and lasting until 1723 when he moved to his final position in Leipzig. 2. The first movement of a Classical concerto would typically be in sonata form. The basso continuo was gradually abandoned. The tension formerly created by the long orchestral ritornello vanished and the two forces are accepted as equal partners. The piano opens very softly, presenting a beautiful theme which after modulating to the dominant, magically and unexpectedly turns to G major. At about 4'03, Dussek once again incorporates a side-stepping harmonic resolution, away from the expected sonority of F major, down a major third to D flat major, before returning home to B flat major.
